〔안정원의 건축 칼럼〕 링우드 교외지역을 밝히는 상징적이고 공공적인 이스트랜드와 사계호텔8

●●●●●●●● 멋진 세상 속 건축디자인_ 오스트레일리아 멜버른의 이스트랜드 타운센터(EASTLAND TOWN CENTRE)의 입체적인 복합 건물… 링우드 교외 지역을 은은하게 밝히는 랜턴이자 주민을 위한 공공적이면서도 상징적인 이스트랜드 타운 광장과 기능성과 최적화된 디테일을 포함한 링우드 도서관, 백화점과 주차타워의 합리적인 건축

120 개의 객실을 갖춘 사계 호텔은 전면이 유리벽으로 둘러싸여 있으며, 6개 층에 부드럽게 감긴 주름진 흰색 커튼이 인상적이다. 밤이 되면 커튼월과 커튼을 통해 빛이 여과되어 내부로 들어오고, 전체적인 유리 상자는 상부에서 랜턴처럼 이스트랜드를 밝힌다. 이처럼 이스트랜드는 타운 광장의 열린 공공성과 상징성을 강하 게 드러내며 새롭게 개발되는 링우드 지역의 또 다른 종합적인 상업‧문화‧교육의 중심지로 거듭나고 있다.

Melbourne is a car-dominated city, with a dense city centre surrounded by a never-ending sprawl of suburban houses. People move by car to get to work, to go to school, to go shopping. Eastland seeks to establish a regional centre in the suburbs of Melbourne that combines transport infrastructure with office work space, medium density housing, culture, leisure and retail uses.

The long term ambition is that Eastland becomes one of a number of local centres that contribute to a more walkable, less car-centric society. Long established behaviours habits are however hard to change, and for the immediate future, accessible and plentiful parking remains important for the success of Eastland. The new buildings along Maroondah Highway contain a large new David Jones Department store and 1,600 additional parking spaces over 5 parking levels. The building is covered with a ribbon-like façade, designed to be seen from a moving car. It uses two simple elements to create large scale patterns responding to the speed of perception from the highway. The two repetitive types of fins are used in different densities, and different rotations to create difference and interest along the length of the highway.
