싱가포르 난양기술대학(NTU)에 새로운 개념의 건물이 들어섰다. 런던을 기반으로 하는 건축디자인그룹 헤더윅 스튜디오와 CPG컨설턴트가 디자인한 러닝허브는 연면적 14,000㎡에 8층 규모로 약 33,000여명의 학생이 이용할 수 있는 다목적 용도의 건물로 계획되었다.

겉으로 볼 때 흡사 옥수수 여러 개를 타원형으로 길게 세워놓은 듯한 건물은 12개의 그룹 강의동과 56개의 그룹 강의실을 내부에 품고 있다.

저마다의 강의실은 중앙의 커다란 아트리움을 향해 열려 있으며 위로 올라갈수록 점차 넓어진다. 이와 반대로 아트리움은 상부로 향할수록 점차 좁아지며 돌출되고 굴곡진 층별 매스를 통해 오묘한 빛의 공간을 만들어내고 있다.

아트리움의 천창을 따라 불규칙하게 흐르는 빛은 내부 곳곳을 밝게 물들이고 있다. 어찌 보면 구름이 둥둥 떠다니는 듯 하기도 하며, 나무들이 가득 차있는 숲 속에 들어온 듯하다.

대지 형상에 따라 타원형으로 배치된 건물은 내부에서 그 연속성을 이어간다. 각각의 강의실은 타원형으로 아트리움을 향해 몰려 있으며 복도에서 훤히 강의실 내부가 훤히 바라보인다.

이는 거의 대부분의 장소에서 학습과정이 가능한 디지털 시대에 부합하도록 학생들과 교수들이 만나서 다양한 학문에 관해 서로 상호작용할 수 있게 만든다는 학교 측의 협력적 학습방식에 대한 열의가 표현된 것이다.

학생들은 새롭게 고안된 신개념의 강의실을 통해 더 상호적인 소규모 학습과 활동적인 학습을 증진시킬 수 있다. 유연한 구성 방식의 강의실은 교수들이 학생들에게 더 참여율을 높이는 동시에 더 쉽게 서로 협력할 수 있는 교육환경을 만들어준다.

>> Heatherwick Studio Established by Thomas Heatherwick in 1994, Heatherwick Studio is recognised for its work in architecture, urban infrastructure, sculpture, design and strategic thinking. Today a team of 170, including architects, designers and makers work from a combined studio and workshop in Kings Cross, London. At the heart of the studio’s work is a profound commitment to finding innovative design solutions, with a dedication to artistic thinking and the latent potential of materials and craftsmanship. This is achieved through a working methodology of collaborative rational inquiry, undertaken in a spirit of curiosity and experimentation. In the twenty years of its existence, Heatherwick Studio has worked in many countries, with a wide range of commissioners and in a variety of regulatory environments. Through this experience, the studio has acquired a high level of expertise in the design and realisation of unusual projects, with a particular focus on the large scale. The studio’s work includes a number of nationally significant projects for the UK, including the award-winning UK Pavilion at the Shanghai World Expo 2010, the Olympic Cauldron for the London 2012 Olympic Games, and the New Bus for London. Thomas is an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Institute of British Architects; a Senior Research Fellow at the Victoria & Albert Museum; and has been awarded Honorary Doctorates from the Royal College of Art, University of Dundee, University of Brighton, Sheffield Hallam University and University of Manchester. He has won the Prince Philip Designers Prize, and, in 2004, was the youngest practitioner to be appointed a Royal Designer for Industry. In 2010, Thomas was awarded the RIBA’s Lubetkin Prize and the London Design Medal in recognition of his outstanding contribution to design. In 2013 Thomas was awarded a CBE for his services to the design industry.
