South Korea will purchase PAC-3 anti-ballistic missiles next year and upgrade its multiple launch rocket (MLR) system to extend the current range to 70-80 kilometers by 2020.

The Defense Acquisition Program Administration told reporters Wednesday that Defense Minister Kim Kwan-jin approved the missile procurement plan for an open bidding in June, aiming to conclude a contract by December.

U.S. aircraft maker Lockheed Martin is known to be in consultations to provide the PAC-3 missiles.

South Korea now operates 48 PAC-2 missiles imported from Germany and seeks to upgrade its missile defense system.

The state arms procurer said that the government will pour 200 billion won ($186 million) to develop 30mm anti-aircraft missiles in the next five years.
