The natural gas flame, a specialty of Pohang, Gyeongsangbuk-do, has been extinguished for the first time in seven and a half years.

According to Pohang City Government, the firework of the "Garden of Fire" at the railroad forest in Daejam-dong, Nam-gu, Pohang, has not been put back on since the afternoon of the 27th of last month.

The flame was created on March 8, 2017, when a construction company caught the excavator on fire with natural gas from underground water while digging 200 meters underground to develop underground water in the process of building a park using abandoned railroads.

Contrary to early predictions that the fire would go out quickly, it continued to burn.

When the fire did not go out, Pohang City changed its mind and created a park under the name of "The Garden of Fire" by preserving the excavator and surrounding soil that caught fire at the end of 2017, and installing fire-proof glass around it so that it could be seen outside.

Thanks to this, the Garden of Fire has become a popular spot for everyone to visit at least once in Pohang Railway Forest, which was completed in May 2019.

According to an investigation by Pohang City, natural gas made of methane was buried underground in the Garden of Fire, but it was not economical.

Pohang City is considering how to use the garden of fire in the future.
