Samsung Electronics plans to lay off thousands of people in Southeast Asia, Australia and New Zealand to reduce its global workforce, Bloomberg reported on the 1st local time, citing unnamed sources.

An official said Samsung Electronics employees in various departments in Singapore were informed of details regarding the job cut plan in a closed meeting with human resources managers and managers.

Another official said job cuts were also planned for overseas subsidiaries in other regions.

In response, Samsung Electronics said, "Some overseas subsidiaries are conducting routine manpower adjustments to improve operational efficiency," adding, "We have not set specific targets for specific positions at the company level."

Samsung Electronics has already cut about 10% of its workforce in parts of India and South America recently, Bloomberg said, citing sources.

It also added that there is a possibility of reducing the workforce to less than 10% of Samsung Electronics' total overseas workforce of 147,000.
