An unexploded bomb exploded at Miyazaki Airport in Kyushu, Japan, causing the airport's taxiway to sink, halting the airport's takeoff and landing.

According to Kyodo News and NHK, smoke rose from the Miyazaki Airport taxiway at around 8 a.m. today (2nd).

There were no casualties, but a civil flight to Haneda Airport passed through the vicinity about two minutes before the explosion, Kyodo News said.

According to investigations by the Self-Defense Forces and others, the accident was identified as an unexploded bomb explosion, and the site of the explosion had an oval hole about 7 meters wide and 4 meters long and about 1 meter deep.

NHK said several unexploded bombs dropped by U.S. forces during World War II have been found at the airport in the past.

More than 60 flights were canceled as airport runways were closed all day.

Miyazaki Airport is undergoing maintenance with the aim of resuming operations tomorrow morning (3rd).
