In the past decade, 38 Koreans have been killed in the Philippines.

It is by far the largest number in countries in the Asia-Pacific region where many Koreans visit, nearly eight times as many Koreans were killed in China.

Reporter Hong Sun-ki reports.

In May, a Korean tourist was killed and then buried in a reservoir in Pattaya, a famous Thai resort.

The criminal was also Korean, and it took four months to arrest all accomplices and bring them back to Korea.

[Lee Seung-gyu/Last month, head of the Gyeongnam Provincial Police Agency's criminal activities team: No matter how much the suspect denies it, I think we can prove it if we comprehensively investigate what we've been investigating so far]

As such, Korean tourists and ethnic Koreans are often killed in homicides abroad, especially in Southeast Asia.

Among them, the Philippines has killed the most Koreans in homicides, with 38 people killed in the last decade.

It is an overwhelming number among countries in Asia and the Pacific, nearly eight times the number of Koreans killed in China in 10 years.

In terms of violent crimes such as robbery, kidnapping, and sexual assault, including murder, China had the most damage to Koreans, but the Philippines followed.

In terms of murder and robbery, the Philippines is also overwhelmingly more than China.

Some point out that the response of our diplomatic missions in the Philippines and other local countries is insufficient.

[Kim Young-bae / Democratic National Assembly Member (Department of Foreign Affairs and Unification Committee): We believe that the embassy and the Korean diplomatic authorities need to respond more strongly through judicial cooperation with the Philippines in order to protect the safety of Korean residents and citizens from increasingly brutal criminal acts.]

Recently, in the Philippines, a local police officer who killed a Korean in 2016 was sentenced to life in prison after a trial, but went into hiding.

The Korean Embassy in the Philippines said it continues to ask the Philippine Ministry of Justice and the National Police Agency to secure the accused's whereabouts in response to the poor response.
