American biologists Victor Ambrose and Gary Loveken, who contributed to the discovery of microRNA, were selected as winners of this year's Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine.

The Nobel Committee of the Karolinska Institute in Sweden announced on the 7th local time that it has decided to award two people, including Victor Ambrose, the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, in recognition of its research on microRNA and its role in gene regulation.

The Nobel Committee said, "Thanks to the two's groundbreaking discoveries, we have revealed a whole new principle of genetic regulation."

He also emphasized, "MicroRNA is proving to be fundamentally important in how organisms develop and function."

MicroRNA is a type of ribonucleic acid, a group of small RNA molecules that play a role in controlling biological gene expression.

The winner of the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine will receive 11 million Swedish krona and 1.34 billion won in Korean money.

Starting with the physiological medicine award, the Nobel committee will announce the winners of the physics prize on the 8th, the chemistry prize on the 9th, the literature prize on the 10th, the peace prize on the 11th, and the economics prize on the 14th.
