Rep. Yang Moon-seok of the Democratic Party of Korea even used the expression "Gisaeng" when Choi Eung-cheon, head of the National Heritage Administration, said that he did not pay Korean traditional musicians at the time, criticizing the elders for forcibly mobilizing their disciples to pay for the performance.
Rep. Min Hyung-bae of the same party also criticized the privatization of culture and art.
Bae Hyun-jin, a member of the People's Power, responded that playing gayageum at a meal should not be considered a gisaeng, saying, "It is an expression that Korean traditional musicians may feel humiliated."
In 2019, former President Moon Jae In's wife Kim Jung-sook had a luncheon with 120 intangible heritage holders at the Blue House, and refuted that a performance of a gayageum master was also held.
