Hurricane Milton hit southeastern Florida, killing at least 10 people, the U.S. government says.

Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas told a White House briefing that five people had died in St. Lucie County alone on Florida's east coast, adding that at least 10 people had been reported dead.

CNN and NBC reported that the death toll was 12, two more than Minister Mayorkas announced.

Milton, which made landfall in Florida as a Category 3 hurricane, gradually weakened, but caused major damage as it was accompanied by strong winds up to 195 kilometers per hour and heavy rain of up to 450 millimeters.

More than 100 mobile homes were destroyed in St. Lucie County on Florida's east coast, and the roof of Tropicana Field, home to the Tampa Bay Rays, was torn off in St. Petersburg.Florida Governor Ron DeSantis
said the storm had caused major damage, but said it was severe, but fortunately it did not go to the worst-case scenario.
