At least 22 people were killed and 117 injured when Israeli forces struck two areas in central Lebanon's capital Beirut on Tuesday night, Lebanon's health ministry said.

Local broadcast footage showed smoke rising through the high-rise buildings.

Lebanon's health ministry said the airstrike severely damaged apartments in central Beirut and in another area, an entire residential building full of residents and refugees was burned down and completely collapsed.

The recent Israeli bombardment of Beirut has been concentrated in the southern suburbs, known as Hezbollah's main stronghold, and the bombing of central Beirut is unusual.

Amid some reports that the attack targeted certain Hezbollah executives, Reuters quoted multiple security sources as saying that "a high-level Hezbollah Wafiq Safa survived an Israeli assassination attempt."

Israeli forces have issued new evacuation warnings for the southern suburbs of Beirut, including certain buildings, while they have not immediately taken a position on the airstrikes.
