An industry-academia convergence district, which brings together industrial complexes, universities, and research institutes in one building, opened in Gyeongsan, Gyeongsangbuk-do.

Through spatial integration, it has created a virtuous cycle of R&D and employment, and attention is being paid to whether it will be a new vitality for the sluggish non-metropolitan industrial complex.

Reporter Kim Geun-woo reports.

The engineering practice of college students is in full swing in the classroom.

In the building next door, a venture company official meets students for major and career counseling.

It is an industry-academic convergence district that brings companies and universities together in one building.

It is located in the middle of an industrial complex with various companies, and related departments such as semiconductors and robots have moved in.

In order to promote industry-academia cooperation, we have increased the space we use together to maximize the contact surface between university students and businessmen.

[Jo Minjae / Daegu Catholic University Semiconductor and Electronic Engineering 3rd year: Since they are all related to departments, I think it's good to learn a lot of better things and to hear a lot of good things as we come and go]

Similar attempts have been made in the meantime, including technopark, but it is true that there has been no remarkable achievement.

The separation of the space created a psychological barrier, and eventually the exchange was cut off.

This is why universities, research institutes, and companies are trying to create synergy by spatially integrating them.

[Kim Bong-hwan / Director of Gyeongsan Industrial-Academic Convergence: I think it's different from other industrial-academic convergence because it achieves spatial integration that allows companies to come whenever they want and then go to companies whenever they want]

ICT-related infrastructure has recently increased significantly in Gyeongsan, with the construction of the largest start-up space in the non-metropolitan area, Unicorn Park.

In connection with this, local governments plan to significantly improve the structure of local industrial complexes.

[Cho Hyun-il / Gyeongsan Market, North Gyeongsang Province: In the past, there were only auto parts complexes and universities in Gyeongsan, but now we have to go out to ICT.... When young people start their own businesses and start-ups, we will make sure to provide financial and spatial support.]

Attention is focusing on whether the new attempt to move universities and research institutes in the middle of industrial complexes will be able to increase the competitiveness of local industries by converging industry and academics.
