The European Union, the EU, said it was "a reminder of the serious consequences of the use of nuclear weapons and the responsibility of all nuclear powers to prevent them from happening" when it was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize by Japan's Council of Atomic Bomb Victims.

"As the leaders of the five nuclear powers reaffirmed in January 2022, there is no winner in a nuclear war and it should never happen," EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Rousseff Borrell said in a statement on the afternoon of the 11th local time.

Earlier, the leaders of five countries - the U.S., Britain, France, Russia and China - adopted a Joint Statement on Preventing Nuclear War and Arms Competition in January 2022, but the war in Ukraine broke out more than a month later, and Russia has since continued its "nuclear threat" by pushing for a revision of its nuclear use doctrine.

Charles Michel, president of the EU Summit, also stressed on social media that "constant support for a world without nuclear weapons is more important than ever at a time when dangerous nuclear-related investigations are increasing."

EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen also stressed on social media that the Nobel Peace Prize sends a strong message and that she has a "duty to protect the next generation from the fear of nuclear war."
