Han Kang's work "The Vegetarian," Korea's first Nobel laureate in literature, will be produced in an Italian play to meet European audiences.

According to local media and the Korean Cultural Center in Italy on the 11th, the Italian theater company INDEX will stage the play "The Vegetarian" in major cities in Italy and France from the 25th to February next year.

It will meet local audiences in Bologna, Rome, Milan and Turin in Italy, and Paris, Tour, Toulouse, Chamberi and Montpellier in France.

Local media said it was not an example of production based on interest from winning the Nobel Prize for Literature, and Daria DeFlorian, a theater director and actor, had been hooked on Han Kang's work for a few years.

"I read 'The Vegetarian' in 2018 and planned the play," DeFlorian said. "I was very happy to hear that Han Kang, who always worked as a writer with a humble attitude, received the Nobel Prize in Literature."

The play "The Vegetarian" was co-produced by the theater company INDEX with major theaters and festivals in Italy and France.

The Korean Cultural Center, along with the Korean Literature Translation Institute, supported the production of plays by inspecting novels written in Korean so that they could be faithfully produced in Italian scripts.
