A single mother in her 20s, who left her newborn child in a baby box without any counseling, has been sentenced to a suspended prison sentence.

Wonju Branch of Chuncheon District Court sentenced 27-year-old A, who was charged with child abandonment and neglect, to eight months in prison and two years of probation and ordered 40 hours of lectures to prevent child abuse.

Mr. A abandoned his son in a baby box in Gwanak-gu, Seoul, early on June 2nd last year and was put on trial.

Mr. A claimed that he was unable to raise a child because he was in financial difficulty and did not inform his biological father of the birth, but he did not immediately make the relevant agency aware of it by ringing the bell when receiving counseling or entrusting the child.

The court said it was guilty of abandoning children who are children and newborns without following legal adoption procedures, but said it decided the sentence in consideration of the fact that they are first-time offenders and the victim is currently undergoing normal adoption procedures.

The court is guilty of leaving a child in a baby box unless the newborn's life is in danger, such as consulting with related agencies first.
