Two days after Taiwanese President Lei Ching-deh's speech on the country's founding anniversary, which emphasized "sovereignty," China said it was considering additional trade measures for Taiwan.

"Currently, relevant departments are studying further measures based on Taiwan's findings of a trade barrier investigation into China," a spokesperson for China's commerce ministry said, according to China Central Television.

The comments came in response to a reporter's question about follow-up after the Commerce Department announced in December last year that Taiwan's ban on imports of more than 2,500 products from China, including agricultural products, was a trade barrier.

China's commerce ministry stressed that Taiwan's ruling DPP has not taken any practical steps to lift trade restrictions on China.

In response, Reuters analyzed that China may be signaling tariffs or other forms of economic pressure on Taiwan in the near future.

China's suggestion of trade retaliation is noteworthy in that it came after President Lai's National Foundation Day speech, which reiterated that Taiwan and China are not subjugated to each other."The People's Republic of China has no right to represent Taiwan," President

Lai said in a speech commemorating the 113th anniversary of the border convention in front of Taipei's presidential office on the 10th.
