Lee Jae-won, a senior judge at the Changwon District Court's Criminal Chamber 5, announced on the 13th that he sentenced A, a 30-year-old biological mother, and B, an acquaintance of A, to one year in prison, respectively, who were charged with manslaughter.
In August 2022, the two were indicted on charges of feeding two-month-old A's son, C, in milk powder, lying him down, and killing him at a motel in Changwon, Gyeongsangnam-do.
As a result of an autopsy, C suffocated to death due to the toxic effect of diphenhydramine in the cold medicine and blocked the nose and mouth at the same time.
Adult cold medicine is not recommended for children under the age of 4 because it can lead to death of infants due to severe side effects.
"The guilt is very heavy because the defendants would not have caused C's death if they had paid a little attention," the court said. "The situation is not good after the crime, such as hiding the fact that they were given cold medicine in the early stages of the investigation, but we considered admitting and reflecting on the crime."
