film 'Jeon, Lan' revealed the charm of the work with a strong belief in the actors. On the afternoon of the 14th, YTN met with director Kim Sang-man, who caught the megaphone of the movie "Jeon, Ran" in Samcheong-dong, Jongno-gu, Seoul, and talked about the work.
'Jeonran' is a Netflix film about a time of chaos during the Japanese War, when "Jongryo" (Park Jung-min), the son of Joseon's highest military family, and his body type "Cheon-young" (Kang Dong-won) become enemies and meet again as a righteous army officer, closest to "Sunjo" (Cha Seung-won).
The film, which was previously selected as the opening film of the 29th Busan International Film Festival on the 2nd and unveiled, succeeded in attracting the audience's response, and was released worldwide on the 11th and is gaining popularity.
On this day, director Kim said, "It is true that there was a little anxiety because it was a directing work for the first time in a long time. However, I am grateful and glad that the good response of being fun and public, including the selection of the opening film of the Busan International Film Festival, is generally good," he said, opening the interview with a heartwarming feeling.
Regarding the movie's release to the world through Netflix, he said, "Korean historical dramas, including 'Kingdom,' have already received good responses, and I think the aspect of action movies makes it easier for audiences to access," explaining that the work has enough appeal to appeal to global audiences beyond Korea. In addition, director Kim added, "I thought it was a classic subject regardless of the country, because some foreign critics I met in Busan explained that civil unrest and uprising are history that has been around the world."
The film was produced by director Park Chan-wook and participated in the screenplay, drawing attention even before cranking up, and director Kim Sang-man said he received great help from director Park. In particular, director Park Chan-wook gave Kim the full authority to direct, but he did not spare various advice and support.
Director Kim said, "Director Park Chan-wook must be busy filming 'The Companion', but he revised the script with strictness, including commas, investigations, and even one Toshi." Perhaps his sincerity in the Republic of Korea will not match anyone," he said, adding that he was surprised by Park Chan-wook's meticulousness.
In addition, director Park advised him not to edit conventionally and mechanically, which was a great help to the editing process. Director Kim responded, "Thanks to director Park Chan-wook, the director's initial intention to direct was revived better. If there is anything bad about the work, it is because of my lack of skills," he said, smiling. Director Kim Sang-man showed his affection for the two actors, Kang ∀, and Park Jung-min, as the fierce combination and desperate bromance of
{Jeonran} are important attractions above all else. He said, "I like to share ideas with actors in the field rather than giving detailed and strict directions," adding, "I received a lot of help from the two actors in this work.
Director Kim said, "I think it's an actor to dig deep into characters rather than a director. Thanks to the actor, there are many cases where unthinkable interpretations come out or hard ones are broken. "Jeon and Lan" also emphasized that the acting skills of the two actors who made good use of the characters are the biggest attraction of the work, and did not forget the love call for the global prospective audience who has not yet seen the work.
