According to the theater industry, including the National Theater Company, today (14th), he passed away on the 13th while battling esophageal cancer.
Born in Naju, Jeollanam-do in 1940, the deceased began his theater career as a member of the theater company 'Gwangjang' in 1963.
He joined the National Theater Company in 1972 and was active, and from 1994 to 1996, he served as the head of the National Theater Company.
After appearing in more than 180 plays, he won the Best New Actor Award at the Baeksang Arts Awards, the Dong-A Theater Award, the Best Actor Award, the Actor of the Year Award at the Theater Actors Association, and the Lee Hae-rang Theater Award, starting with the New Actor Award at the Korean Theater Film Awards in 1969.
Because of his appearance resembling former President Rhee Syng-man, he mainly played the role of former President Lee in TV dramas such as "The Age of the Wild," "Hero Era," and "Seoul 1945."
The deceased, who left the stage in 2016 due to esophageal cancer while preparing for the performance of the play "Hamlet," returned to the play "Romulus the Great" in 2018 to announce his robustness.
The mortuary was set up at the funeral hall of Seoul National University Hospital, and the coffin will be borne at 9 a.m. on the 16th.
