Samsung Electronics plant strike in southern India ends...a return agreement

Workers at Samsung Electronics' plant in southern India, which had left the workplace for more than a month, have decided to end the strike and return to the plant.

According to NDTV in India on the 16th, workers at Samsung Electronics' Sriperumbudur consumer electronics plant near Chennai, Tamil Nadu, in southern India, agreed with Samsung to end the strike and return to the workplace.

"Samsung Electronics has announced several welfare measures for workers," the regional industry and investment minister said in a statement, adding that workers have decided to resume work after the strike.

Samsung Electronics India also welcomed the decision to end the strike and said it would not take action against workers who simply participated in the strike and would work closely with workers to make the Chennai plant a good place to work.

The plant produces refrigerators and washing machines and is responsible for about 20% of Samsung Electronics' annual sales in India, which amounts to $12 billion.

The plant has about 1,800 employees, hundreds of whom went on strike on April 9, demanding labor union recognition, improved working hours and higher wages.

According to the Indian Trade Union Center, workers who participated in the strike have been demanding an average of 25,000 rupees per month and about 410,000 won in our money to 36,000 rupees per month and about 580,000 won per month.

The specific terms of the agreement between Samsung Electronics and the workers were not disclosed.
