Helping physical and mental treatment through agricultural activities is called 'healing agriculture',
It has also been shown to be effective in rehabilitation of elderly people with hemiplegia who cannot use one side of their body due to the aftereffects of
stroke.

Reporter Choi Myung Shin reports.

[Reporter]
It is a healing farm in Iksan, North Jeolla Province.

Seniors who looked somewhat uncomfortable gathered in groups.

The main program is planting lettuce seedlings in the garden and cutting lavender leaves with scissors. The work of transferring chrysanthemum flowers with the scent of autumn

is also popular.

We are paying attention to each movement so that elderly people who suffer from hemiplegia on one side of their body due to the aftereffects of stroke can also exercise their strength.

[Lee Hye Sook / Healing Farm Director: I'm supporting the exercise so that the paralyzed side or the non-paralyzed side can coexist and work out together]

The elderly with uncomfortable right limbs became lighter after participating in the program.

[Kim Hwa-soon/Busong-dong, Iksan-si, Jeollabuk-do: In the past, it was hard to put it up here, but I naturally put it up like this and I like it.]

Only 10% of people recover to the normal range if they suffer brain damage caused by a stroke.

The remaining 90% have a hemiplegic disorder and have to rely on rehabilitation for the rest of their lives.

This is why the Rural Development Administration has developed a healing agricultural program for the elderly with hemiplegia.

I applied it to 30 elderly people aged 65 or older with hemiplegia
Both muscle strength and walking ability of the paralyzed side were improved compared to the control group that performed
individual exercise.

Self-esteem also increased by 10.7%, which is also helpful for emotional stability.

[Moon Ji-won / Urban Agriculture Research, Rural Development Administration: We aimed to achieve rehabilitation effects through cultivation activities while growing crops. To select and repeat seven movements that can activate the paralysis side strength....]

In order to increase accessibility to healing agricultural programs, the Rural Development Administration has decided to actively seek links with welfare institutions and expand the current seven types of programs to 19.
