On the 18th local time, an accident in Mineria, 200 kilometers northeast of the Sri Lankan capital, Colombo, derailed two trains and severely damaged the railroad.
The engineer said he could not stop the train after finding a group of elephants crossing the railroad tracks 10 meters away.
Mineria is famous for wild elephant tourism, but 24 were killed last year and seven this month after a recent train crash with elephants.
Elephants are also approaching authorization due to habitat destruction and food shortages.
