A man in his 40s was arrested at the scene after throwing a firebomb at the headquarters of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party in Japan and attempting to rush a car into the prime minister's residence.

We are struggling to come up with measures as violent acts have occurred again ahead of the House of Representatives election on the 27th.

I'm reporter Jeong Yu-shin on the report.

Police and bodyguards approach the area around the lit vehicle carefully with shields.

Early in the morning, a man in his 40s drove in front of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party headquarters in Tokyo and threw five objects that appeared to be flames.

Some fell inside the LDP headquarters site, and were hit by a police task force vehicle and set on fire.

He was then blocked by an iron fence as he tried to drive into the Japanese prime minister's residence 600 meters away.

He also tried to throw a smoky barrel, but he was stopped by the police and arrested at the scene.

Ten more oil cans and unused firebombs were found inside the arrested suspect's vehicle, which could have led to major damage.

The incident occurred ahead of Japan's House of Representatives election, which will take place on the 27th.

The arrested suspect was a 49-year-old man who posted on social media related to politics, including opposition to the restart of nuclear power plants, according to local media.

Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba said, "Democracy should not be daunted by violence," adding, "We will do our best to ensure the safety of the people."

As a result, the Japanese National Police Agency ordered the security of important facilities and the protection of key personnel.

Recently, there have been a series of terrorist incidents targeting key members of the Liberal Democratic Party in major elections in Japan, raising concerns.

In July 2022, former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe was killed in a shooting attack during a campaign ahead of the upper house election, traumatizing the Japanese archipelago.

In April last year, a man in his 20s threw explosives at former Prime Minister Fumio Kishida at a by-election campaign site in Wakayama Prefecture and is on trial for attempted murder.
