The National Fire Agency has decided to improve the school lunch environment amid controversy over "insolvent meals" as it was revealed that the unit price of a fire official's meal was only around 3,000 won.

The National Fire Agency said it held a "Central-City Fire Policy Coordination Meeting" on the 19th to check the status of school meal support and the operation of the system and discuss ways to improve it.

Earlier, at the National Assembly on the 10th, the controversy over the "poor school meals for firefighters" was on the cutting board.

According to the data received by the office of Han Byeong-do, a member of the National Assembly's Public Administration and Security Committee, from the National Fire Agency, the unit price of a meal at fire station A in Daegu was only 3,112 won. The unit price of meals at Gyeongnam B Fire Station was 3,852 won and Jeonbuk C Fire Station was 3,920 won, and most fire stations had a unit price of 4,000 won.

In fact, as photos of firefighters' meals were released, some netizens pointed out that "firefighters are eating worse than criminals" compared to prison meals released by the Ministry of Justice in the past.

As the controversy over firefighters' "poor school meals" intensified, the National Fire Agency decided to clarify standards for the cost of school meals per person and drinking water (食數 and number of meals) for field members, and to prepare guidelines to secure sufficient labor costs for school meals.

"Although there may be differences in degree depending on local conditions, we will actively make efforts through policy and institutional support at the central level to ensure that the necessary support for fire fighting activities is not insufficient," said Heo Seok-gon, head of the fire department.
