Five sites have been selected as sites for the "CCU Mega Project" and carbon dioxide capture and utilization for carbon reduction.

The Ministry of Science and ICT said it has selected five oil refining and chemical plants in Yeosu, South Jeolla Province, a thermal power plant in Boryeong, South Chungcheong Province, and a steel plant in Pohang, North Gyeongsang Province, as sites for large-scale CCU demonstration projects.

GS Caltex in Yeosu, Jeollanam-do, offered to make carbon dioxide generated in the oil refining chemical process into olefin, a plastic material,

Korea Central Power Co. in Boryeong, South Chungcheong Province, plans to demonstrate a technology to convert carbon dioxide from thermal power plants into sustainable aviation oil.

Pohang Steelworks in Pohang, North Gyeongsang Province, said it will convert carbon dioxide emitted from the steel industry into low-carbon methanol, an eco-friendly fuel for ships.

Based on the selected site and demonstration, the government plans to carry out the project in earnest from 2026 after a preliminary feasibility study.

CCU is a key strategic tool for realizing carbon neutrality, and the International Energy Agency expects CCU to be responsible for 15% of global carbon dioxide reductions by 2070.
