The recent surge in overseas travel demand has also led to an increase in travel-related consumer damage for the elderly in their 60s and older.

From January 2021 to June 2024, a total of 370 applications were filed with the Korea Consumer Agency for damages related to overseas travel, with the number of cases counted in 2023 alone up 331% year-on-year.

63.8% of the reasons for applying for damage relief were "contract cancellation and penalty complaints before departure," and 43.6% were "contract termination due to health problems" as the reason for disputes related to penalties.

In particular, elderly people in their 60s or older prefer package products sold by travel agencies or home shopping, but there are many damages caused by not properly recognizing important information such as penalties.

In the case of products subject to special terms and conditions, 36.8% of the elderly signed contracts without properly recognizing the details of the contract, even though penalties may be imposed if the elderly cancel their schedules for health reasons.
