According to the data submitted by Rep. Park Hee-seung of the Democratic Party of Korea from the Ministry of Health and Welfare, the average age of 1,191 cardiothoracic surgeons working at medical institutions nationwide was 53.3 years old as of the end of August.
By age group, 30.2% were in their 50s, 26.2% were in their 60s, 24.4% were in their 40s, and only 13% were in their 30s or younger.
In particular, including those over 70 years of age, 32.5% of cardiothoracic surgeons aged 60 or older were one out of three.
In addition, the number of cardiothoracic surgeons per 1,000 people was only 0.02, with 0.06 neurosurgeons per 1,000 people and 0.13 surgeons.
