British Defence Minister John Healy and German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius said in a joint statement that they had decided to sign the "Trinity House Treaty" in London on Sunday local time.
The U.K. and Germany, two of Europe's biggest defense spending countries, have cooperated with each other as members of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization and NATO, but this is the first time they have signed a separate defense treaty.
Healy stressed that the treaty is a "relief vote" that will bring the military and defense industries of the two countries to closer ties.
"European security should not be taken for granted," Pistorius said, urging other allies to participate in military cooperation projects pursued by Britain and Germany.
