China's first aircraft carrier, Liaoning, passed through the Taiwan Strait.

Taiwan's Defense Ministry said, "The Liaoning aircraft carrier flew north through the Taiwan Strait last night (22nd). We operated a joint intelligence surveillance and reconnaissance system to guard and respond by identifying movements."

In response, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Zhen said in a regular briefing, "It is normal for Chinese carriers to pass through their own territorial waters," adding, "No matter what the Taiwanese authorities say, we cannot change the trend of unification."

The Liaoning aircraft carrier's voyage is interpreted as a response to the passage of two U.S. and Canadian warships through the Taiwan Strait on the 20th.

On the 14th, the Liaoning was also deployed to exercise the Chinese military's siege of Taiwan.
