Philippine Tropical Storm Kills 14 People, Tens of thousands of Migrants

At least 14 people have been killed and tens of thousands displaced in the Philippines as Tropical Storm Trami brings strong winds and heavy rain.

Local police told Reuters at least 12 people were killed in Naga city alone as heavy rains in Bicol, central Philippines, flooded rivers and flooded homes.

In other parts of Bicol, a 71-year-old man was killed when he fell from the roof of his house, and a 22-year-old man was crushed by a tree.

In addition, five fishermen are missing and more than 47,500 people have fled their homes.

At the same time, the storm blew winds of 95 km/h, shutting down government offices and public schools across Luzon Island, except for government departments and institutions essential for disaster response.

"The worst is yet to come," Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos said at a briefing on the 23rd. "Let's prepare everyone."

Weather officials predicted the storm would make landfall in Isabella, northeast of Luzon Island, on the night of the 23rd or the morning of the 24th, with up to 200 millimeters of heavy rain per day.
