The U.N. Environment Program said in a report on the 24th local time that national greenhouse gas reduction targets are being established based on the international community's commitment to reduce annual greenhouse gas emissions by 42% by 2030 and 57% by 2035, but they are not being implemented properly. The
report said greenhouse gas emissions reached an all-time high of 57.1 billion tons of carbon dioxide last year, even as countries set ambitious reduction targets.
"Even if each country reduces greenhouse gas emissions according to its goals by 2030, it could rise to 2.6 to 2.8 degrees without tying it to the international community's target of 1.5 to 2.0 degrees higher than before industrialization," he predicted.
"If countries continue not to follow their goals, global temperatures will rise from 2.6 degrees to up to 3.1 degrees within this century," he warned. The
report emphasized that greenhouse gas emissions reduction of 7.5% per year should be achieved to limit the increase in global temperature to 1.5 degrees Celsius compared to pre-industrial times.
"The gap in emissions revealed in the report is clear and we are playing with fire now," U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres said in a report. "We need to address the gap between policy goals and implementation, the gap in fiscal plans and so on."
