On the New York Stock Exchange, the Dow closed 0.33% lower at 42,374.36.
The benchmark Standard & Poor's 500 rose 0.21% from the previous session to 5,809.86 and the Nasdaq Composite added 0.76% to 18,415.49, respectively.
The Nasdaq Composite rebounded a day after it stopped rising and fell for five consecutive trading days the previous day, helped by a surge in Tesla shares that opened the door to big tech earnings reports.
On the other hand, the Dow fell for four consecutive trading days for the first time since June, reflecting disappointment over global IT company IBM's performance amid lingering pressure over the possibility of prolonged high interest rates.
