Superintendents of education across the country urged the National Assembly and the government to come up with measures, saying that the local education tax for tobacco consumption tax will sunset at the end of this year, resulting in a hole in the budget of 1.6 trillion won.

The National Council of Provincial Superintendents expressed serious concern about the local education financial crisis at the National Assembly yesterday (28th) and expressed opposition to the sunset.

At the same time, he stressed that the sunset of local education tax for tobacco consumption tax will lead to a decrease in transfer fees to provincial and provincial offices of education and deteriorate educational conditions, which will reduce the quality of education for students.

He then expressed strong regret to the Ministry of Public Administration and Security, which wants to unilaterally sunset the tobacco consumption tax, which has been in place for 29 years, and called for a phased reduction from 2028 after at least three years of extension.

In the meantime, 17 education offices have transferred 43.99% of tobacco consumption tax to local education tax, reaching 1.6 trillion won this year, and will not receive local education tax in the future when the legal basis for this expires at the end of this year.
