Higher proportions of online consumption lead to a decrease in the number of employed, but lower consumer price growth.

Kim Ji-yeon, Korea Development Institute's KDI Outlook General Manager, said this was the result of an analysis of the relationship between online consumption share, employment, and prices from the first quarter of 2011 to the second quarter of this year.

Kim Ji-yeon explained that if the proportion of online consumption expands by 1 percentage point, the average number of employed people per year decreases by 34,000 per year, mainly in accommodation, restaurant, wholesale and retail.

It also added that commodity inflation for the year fell by 0.07%p.

This is the result of the reduced distribution stage and reduced store maintenance and labor costs, allowing goods to be sold at a lower price than offline.

General Manager Kim said that it is not easy for workers to move between industries within a short period of time, and suggested that they should help smooth the transition of industries by strengthening retraining.
