recently met with YTN star at the Human Entertainment headquarters in Yeonnam-dong, Mapo-gu, Seoul, to tell the behind-the-scenes story of season 2 of the Apple TV+ original series "Pachinko."
Season 1 of "Pachinko," based on the novel of the same name, was first released in March 2022. Since then, he has made headlines by winning the Edinburgh TV Awards for Best International Drama in 2022, winning the Gold Derby Awards for Best Drama and the 28th Critics' Choice Awards for Best Foreign Language Series.
While season 1 depicts the main characters of Seonja and Korean immigrants who leave their homeland in the 1910s and start a new life in Japan, season 2 is set in Osaka in 1945 during World War II. It tells the story of a prince struggling to protect his family. Season 2 is a total of eight episodes, and all of them were released on the 11th.Jeong In-ji, who plays the mother of Kim Min-ha and Yoon Yeo-jeong, who play the characters in the
play, was born in 1984. In addition to the feeling of being a "mother" who has not yet experienced it, he recalled that it was a big challenge for an actor because he had to act as an elderly man in season 2.
Jeong In-ji laughed, saying, "Seon-ja becomes an old man with the passage of time and even grandchildren." He said, "I didn't approach him as an old man, but I just saw him as a woman. It's a woman who's experienced this kind of period. My child and grandson started like that, so it was better," he said.
"I liked that history didn't become the main character," he said, who came to respect the women in "Pachinko" while acting. At the beginning of the original novel, there is a phrase, "No matter how much the world is, I live." This was a drama that I could feel. Even if there is a windfall in life, it is defined as "the story of women who lived in that era like daily life."
The behind-the-scenes story of Jung In-ji's casting, who debuted on her first OTT stage with "Pachinko," is also interesting. He, who mainly worked in plays and musicals, said that this work, which cost 100 billion won to produce, felt tremendous.
Jeong In-ji said, "At a musical performance, I saw myself wearing hanbok and dented hair, and I got a casting proposal. But at first, I know it's a scam. I thought it didn't suit me that I was a mother representing Korea. The production cost was also difficult to realize, and most of all, I didn't know the size of the production. So I said I wouldn't do it at first. In particular, I told you that I wouldn't be able to film in Canada because I had a scheduled performance, but the person who suggested casting called the production company directly that was contracted with me first and broke the contract. So I was able to do 'Pachinko'."
Jeong In-ji, who is discussing her next film, said, "I want to make it smell like a person no matter what role I meet in the future. I think we should not be ashamed of this line and role while acting," he said.
