The Supreme Court reversed and returned the case to Jeongeup Mayor Lee Hak-soo of Jeonbuk Self-Governing Province, who was sentenced to invalidity of election by the lower court on charges of violating the Public Official Election Act.

This kept the mayor in office.

The Supreme Court today (31st) sent the case back to the Gwangju High Court, breaking the original court that sentenced Jeongeup Mayor Lee Hak-soo to a fine of 10 million won for violating the Public Official Election Act.

The court explained that the expressions in question used by Mayor Lee during the June 1 local elections in 2022 are "expression of opinion," and that false facts mentioned in TV debate remarks and press releases are only peripheral, making it difficult to establish a crime.

Earlier, Mayor Lee was fined 10 million won in the first and second trials after he was indicted on charges of publishing false information about his opponent during the June 1 local elections in 2022.
