Amid a recent accident in which a Korean university student died of dengue while visiting Pakistan, the number of patients in the Philippines, a major domestic dengue inflow country, is increasing rapidly, requiring caution.

According to the Korean Embassy in Pakistan on the 27th (local time), A, who is attending a university in Seoul, died of dengue at a hospital in Lahore, eastern Pakistan, on the 22nd.

According to the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the cumulative number of dengue patients in Korea totaled 170 from this year to this month, up 16.4% from 146 a year earlier.

By country of inflow, Indonesia had the highest number of inflow patients with 64 (37.6%), followed by the Philippines with 44 (25.9%). Thailand has 22 (12.9%) and Vietnam and Malaysia have eight (4.7%), respectively.

In particular, the Philippines, a major dengue inflow country, had 269,947 cumulative cases as of the 4th, of which 702 died.

This is the second-highest number since 2010 and an increase of more than 80% compared to the same period last year.

Mosquito-borne diseases are currently spreading worldwide due to climate change and increased overseas travel.

Prevention is the most important because there are no dengue vaccines or treatments so far. The Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommended that mosquito bites are the best precaution and that mosquito repellents be sprayed every three to four hours while traveling and wear bright long clothes.
