SBS's "The Story of the Day with the Tail" aired yesterday (31st) sheds light on the story of Yoo Young-chul on death row and reveals some of his imprisonment.
Former prison officer Lee Yoon-ho, who had a four-hour weekly interview with Yoo Young-chul for seven years, said, "Yoo Young-chul visited me with red eyes (after his imprisonment). He said he complained that he can't sleep well these days.
Yoo Young-chul said, "I keep seeing fantasies from above the bathroom in the living room under the ceiling. About three to four people keep appearing as ghosts," he said. He was then quoted as saying, "That's why I can't sleep and it's so hard that my daily routine is tired."
Yoo Young-chul, who wanted to become a police officer but gave up his dream because he was colorblind, said that it was easier for colorblind to commit murder because it was seen well at night.
He also rejected the request to visit the bereaved families of the victims, saying that he had something to say when he met the bereaved families instead.
"When (Yoo Young-chul) met with the bereaved family, he wanted to explain how he killed the victim and the process," former prison officer Lee said. "When I heard that, I had no choice but to be sure that he was really a psychopath."
Meanwhile, Yoo Young-chul is a serial killer who killed 20 people from September 2003 to July 2004. Even before the serial murder, he committed numerous crimes such as theft and rape, and was arrested with 14 criminal convictions. The number of victims he first confessed to is 30, but the number of victims confirmed so far is 20. With the Yoo Young-chul incident, the concept of "psychopath" became known for the first time in Korea.
After the death penalty was finalized in June 2005, he is currently classified as a prisoner of death in the Seoul Detention Center.
