Today is hydrogen day on November 2nd, when H2, the symbol of hydrogen, is imaged.

In order to practice a large-scale hydrogen economy, domestic researchers have developed an "all-in-one liquid hydrogen safety valve evaluation device" that can produce liquid hydrogen and evaluate the performance of safety valves at once.

Reporter Lim Null-sol reports.

Hydrogen, the richest element in the universe,
It is considered an eco-friendly energy because it does not emit carbon dioxide during the combustion of
.

In addition, hydrogen energy can be used in various fields such as transportation and industry, attracting attention as a major energy source for realizing carbon neutrality.

However, there is still a limit to commercialization, such as the risk of explosion in the process of compressing hydrogen and storing it in a high-pressure tank.

However, domestic researchers have developed a device that can inspect not only the production and storage of liquid hydrogen but also the safety valve performance of tanks that store liquid hydrogen at once.

It is a method of making liquid hydrogen directly with an automatic cryogenic refrigerator and changing it back to high-pressure vaporized hydrogen through heat control to evaluate the pressure control performance of the safety valve.

The device is capable of accurately evaluating the safety valve for a 3-ton liquid hydrogen tank trailer, and is made mobile for easy installation and operation.

[Korakgil / Head of Hydrogen Electro-Mechanics Research Team, Korea Institute of Electricity: (This technology) is a dedicated device that can easily, safely produce liquid hydrogen and perform all the performance of safety valves in a small place, and is the first to be developed in the world.]

The safety valve for liquid hydrogen is a very important part of preventing accidents caused by high pressure.

However, in Korea, the production and distribution network of liquid hydrogen has not been fully established, so expensive alternatives such as liquid helium have been used to incompletely verify the performance of parts.

The researchers explained that the technology developed this time will allow parts to be verified in Korea that were dependent on imports, and that this can safely spread the supply of hydrogen nationwide.

In addition, it is expected that the performance of the device will be improved to handle higher pressure and large-capacity hydrogen to strengthen the competitiveness of domestic hydrogen technology.
