Serbian Interior Minister Ivica Dacicz said 11 people were killed and three were taken to hospital in the daytime accident yesterday.
The number of casualties could rise further as local authorities mobilized more than 80 heavy equipment and personnel to search for missing people under the rubble.CCTV footage of the
accident shows people busily passing in and out of the train station, some sitting on benches under outdoor roofs, and the entire concrete roof collapsed on them.
Novisad railway station reopened in July after three years of renovation, and the accident is expected to spark controversy over poor construction.
"It's a black Friday all over Serbia," Serbian Prime Minister Milos Vucevic said. "We will find those responsible who should have ensured the safety of the structure."
