Foreign media said two people were killed and seven others were injured in a shooting at an entertainment district in downtown Orlando at around 1 a.m. local time, as thousands of people filled the streets.
Police arrested a 17-year-old male suspect at the scene and seized a firearm, and have yet to determine a motive for the crime.
The suspect is charged with first-degree murder using a firearm and attempted murder.
Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer declared a state of emergency in the city's entertainment district and banned alcohol from being sold after midnight for the next seven days.
A curfew was also imposed between 1 a.m. and 5 a.m.
