Fireworks set off fireworks everywhere to mark Diwali, the biggest Hindu festival, engulfing India in thick smoke and worsening air quality.

Reuters said many residents were suffering from severe air pollution after the two-day Diwali festival, which was held from the 31st of last month to yesterday local time.

Diwali is a festival that celebrates the victory of light over darkness, and Hindus enjoy fireworks during Diwali, believing that more light will bring greater luck.

The government of New Delhi banned the use of firecrackers in winter for several years as air pollution became more severe, preventing them from being used in Diwali, but numerous firecrackers were also used in Diwali this year.

Local media reported yesterday (1st) that New Delhi's air quality index was classified as 'very bad', well above 300.
