Today, November 4th is Hangeul Braille Day, which has been designated as a legal anniversary.

More and more companies are introducing braille menus for the visually impaired or marking braille on their products.

But there are still blind spots, so there are growing calls for expanding braille notation.

I'm reporter Hwang Bo Hye-kyung.

Read the menu with your fingers and choose the food to order.

[Han Hye-kyung / Blind: Crimson crab porridge, 19,000 won, four red crab legs]

This is a braille menu introduced by a franchisee last month.

[Han Hye-kyung / Blind person: I didn't know what kind of menu there was before, but I think it was good to know the menu better because I could read it in braille like this.]

The size of the handwriting has been increased 1.5 times so that even low vision people and the elderly can recognize it.

[Hong Eun-ah / Bonjuk official: We have introduced braille menus in more than 350 stores in Seoul. I'm going to get feedback and expand it nationwide....]

An increasing number of companies are displaying braille on household items.

It is a 500ml body wash and kitchen detergent.

The shape of the container is almost the same, and if you hang the braille tag like this, you can tell what kind of product it is.

[Kim Jin-sook / Aekyung Industry official: It would be nice to make a necklace in the form of a necklace because it can be used in various ways whenever the neck shape is different, and silicone is the best for braille display and adherence to products....]

But the blind spot is still there.

Since July this year, braille notation has been mandatory for 39 medicines, sanitary pads, and 15 types of non-medical products such as hand sanitizers, but

There are only five sanitary pad products included here.

Items that are not subject to mandatory requirements, such as newborn baby formula or diapers, are like roads without braille blocks for the visually impaired.

[Han Hye-kyung / Blind person: I don't have an expiration date, so it's hard to know how long it's going to be, and I don't know how many months it's going to be....]

The reality is that companies have to rely on voluntary social contribution activities.

The criticism that the target of mandatory braille notation should be expanded is gaining strength.

I'm YTN Hwang Bo Hye-kyung.
