The FBI, the FBI and the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, and the Cyber Infrastructure Security Agency issued a joint statement saying their adversaries abroad, especially Russia, were making further attempts to spread election-related disinformation to stoke divisions in the United States.
"Russian-linked actors are undermining the legitimacy of the election and instilling fear in voters about the election process, while creating videos and fake news to argue that Americans use violence based on political preferences," the three intelligence agencies noted.
Earlier on the 1st, U.S. intelligence authorities warned that Russia was involved in spreading false information about the presidential election.
Authorities stressed that new disinformation included that "competition officials are inflating ballots and conducting cyberattacks to manipulate voting," which also involved Russian intervention.
Authorities also pointed out that Iran has carried out malicious cyber activities in the past to jeopardize former President Donald Trump's campaign.
Iran may then try to "create fake media content to suppress voting and stoke violence, as it has done in past elections," it said.
Intelligence officials predicted that Russia's activities to spread disinformation on social media could intensify on the day of the election and in the weeks since."This year's presidential election is spreading so much disinformation that there has never been before," said Cyber Infrastructure Security Director Jen Easterly of
. "The American people are exposed to and will continue to be exposed to huge amounts of disinformation."
On social media X and others, a fake image of "Vice President Kamala Harris ahead of former President Donald Trump in Texas" spread in the form of CNN's "Breaking News for the President" and received more than 10 million views.
The broadcaster quickly said that this is fake news.
