According to a recent CNN report, the New York Police Department said six people were killed and 181 were arrested in subway surfing-related accidents from the beginning of this year to the 27th of last month.
'Subway Surfing' is a game of riding on a running subway and has been going on among American teenagers for a few years. Recently, it has become popular again among teenagers due to the TikTok challenge on social networking services (SNS).
Last year, five people were killed in the same accident, and 118 were arrested. On the 3rd, in Queens, New York, two teenage boys fell off balance while surfing the subway on a train, killing one and seriously injuring the other.
On the 23rd of last month, a 13-year-old boy died while surfing the subway.
As the number of related accidents has increased, New York City authorities are taking various measures to prevent teenagers from surfing the subway.
The New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) has worked with SNS platforms such as YouTube, TikTok, and Instagram to block or delete photos and videos related to surfing the subway.
Fourteen justice ministers across the United States have sued TikTok for responsibility for the spread of the subway surfing challenge.
