Shim Jae-chul, a former lawmaker of the Future United Party who filed a lawsuit against the media for damages, saying that false articles against him damaged his social value and evaluation, has been confirmed.

On the 8th of last month, the Supreme Court confirmed the original ruling that former lawmaker Shim lost the plaintiff in a lawsuit filed against Hankyoreh and three reporters asking them to "pay 50 million won."

The Supreme Court saw that the judgment of the lower court that did not acknowledge the liability for damages for illegal acts resulting from defamation was acceptable.

Earlier, Hankyoreh reported in three articles that Shim made a false confession that he received instructions and money from former President Kim during the 1980 Kim Dae Jung insurrection conspiracy incident, unable to overcome the beating and coercion of the new military.

In response, former lawmaker Shim filed a lawsuit claiming that the social evaluation was undermined by false facts, but he lost both the first and second trials.

The appeals court judged that some of the articles are false, but it is difficult to access data during the military dictatorship, and that former lawmaker Shim is not responsible for compensation as he is a public figure.
