The police warned that such incidents could happen in Korea soon.
At the end of last month, the Jeju Western Police Station received a request from Chinese police to find a Chinese woman in her 20s who was traveling to Korea.
At that time, Chinese police received a report from A's parents that their daughter was suspected of being kidnapped.
The police dispatched about 10 detectives around 10 a.m. that day and visited A, who was traveling around 9 p.m. that day.
According to the investigation, the organization that threatened the parents for kidnapping A was a group of Chinese voice phishing. They produced a kidnapping video using AI and deepfake technology with A's photo and voice and delivered it to A's parents.
In the video, A cried and shouted for his life, "Mama" and "Papa," with his body and arms tied in a rope.
A police official said, "It is an elaborate video that uses artificial intelligence technology to create a child as if he were in an emergency situation and be deceived."
"I immediately asked an expert to read whether the video was fake or not, and I received a reply that there was a high possibility of deepfake," he said. "It is not an incident in Korea, but it is an example that shows that deepfake technology can be sufficiently used for violent crimes."
