NATO chief says North Korea's involvement in the war in Ukraine poses a direct threat to the United States and looks forward to discussing countermeasures with U.S. President-elect Donald Trump.

"Russia is providing advanced technology in exchange for North Korea helping the war," NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutter said ahead of the European Political Community summit in Hungary on the 7th local time. "It is a threat not only to the European region but also to the mainland of the United States."

He then stressed that the North Korean military's dispatch to Russia is the most important issue, adding, "I look forward to sitting face to face with Trump to jointly respond to this threat and discuss what more needs to be done."

This is interpreted as emphasizing the solidarity between the U.S. and NATO with the military closeness of North Korea and Russia, conscious of Trump, who is negative about NATO.

"One part of the response is that NATO's European members need to spend more, and Trump is absolutely right," Rutter said.

Asked if he saw the need for a new defense spending agreement, Rutter replied: "I'm confident it will be much higher than 2% in the future."
