Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Vatican's secretary of state, congratulated U.S. President-elect Donald Trump, the Ansa news agency reported.

"According to the Bible, the main virtue of a ruler is wisdom, so we hope Trump has great wisdom," Cardinal Parolin told reporters at an event in Rome, Italy, on the 7th local time.

"First and foremost, I hope to be the president of the entire United States to resolve the polarization of this era and to be a factor in easing tensions in a conflict that is bloodied around the world," he added.

However, Cardinal Parolin expressed doubts over Trump's remarks that the war in Ukraine could be ended within 24 hours if elected during the election process.

"Trump said he would end the war, but he doesn't have a magic wand," the cardinal said.

This is the first time the Vatican has made a public stance on Trump's presidential election victory.

Cardinal Parolyn, who was appointed Vatican Secretary of State along with Pope Francis' accession in 2013, is responsible for the Vatican's political and diplomatic activities and ranks second in Vatican power after the pope.

Pope Francis remains silent about Trump's election.
