[Jung Won / Head of the Security and Safety Department of the Jeju Provincial Coast Guard]
I'll brief you on the search for the sunken ship Venus. First, here's an overview of the accident. At around 04:31 a.m. today, a nearby fishing boat reported to the situation room of the Jeju Coast Guard, saying that the fishing boat Venus was sinking about 22 kilometers northwest of Biyangdo Island in Jeju. The ship in the
accident was Geumseong No.135, a 129-ton fishing boat in Busan, with a total of 27 people on board, including 16 Koreans and 11 Indians and Russians. According to the rescue status, a total of 15 people, including 6 Koreans and 9 Indonesians, were rescued from the fishing boat. Among them, two Korean sailors were rescued unconscious and transferred to a hospital in Jeju, but they were finally pronounced dead. At the time of the accident, the weather was 6 to 8 km per second in the northeast wind and the wave height was within about 2 meters, and the depth of the accident area was about 80 to 90 meters, with a water temperature of 22 degrees.
The following is the status of the search so far. The rescue headquarters of the Korea Coast Guard immediately after the accident and the regional rescue headquarters of the Jeju Regional Coast Guard. The Jeju Coast Guard's regional rescue headquarters were operated immediately. The Jeju Coast Guard's patrol boat 3012 arrived at the scene for the first time and is conducting a search with a nearby fishing boat. We are mobilizing 43 ships and 13 aircraft, including 23 coast guard ships, 3 navy ships, 4 government-run ships, and 13 civilian fishing ships, to search the accident site intensively. During the search process, the location of the sinking was finally confirmed through the search equipment around 08:39 p.m. today. It is assumed that the fishing net is connected to the hull and a Coast Guard diver is being sent to check. We will inform you of the cause of the accident as soon as we confirm it through an accurate investigation into the rescue crew.
Here are the family support for missing persons. After the accident, the crew family was informed of the accident through the shipowner, and the Indonesian crew was contacted through the embassy. We are currently installing and operating a rescue ship at Hallim Port. It's a plan for the future. The sea level search will also be expanded to focus on the search, and underwater search will also be carried out by putting in underwater submarines and underwater search equipment, while lifting up the hull and fishing net in consideration of the current situation. Once again, I would like to express my condolences to the missing family who encountered the unfortunate accident, and we will do our best to find the missing by mobilizing all of our rescue resources. That's about it.
